How to operate and maintain your end-dump trailer gate

How to Videos

We’re dedicated to providing top-notch heavy-duty equipment that easily gets the job done. We’ll break down the ins and outs of our tailgate options—designed for efficiency and durability in every haul. Whether you’re new to using swing gates or looking to understand the differences between air high-lift and hydraulic high-lift systems, we’ve got you covered.

Tailgate Options at MTM

At MTM, we offer several tailgate configurations to match your specific hauling needs:

  1. Barn Door (Swing Gate)
This option swings open to the side and secures to the trailer’s side, making unloading a breeze. Available in both aluminum and steel, it provides flexibility based on your material needs and job demands.
  2. Top-Swing Gate with High-Lift Options
For versatility in material hanTdling, we offer a top-swing gate that opens from the top and swings down. This style comes in two high-lift options—air and hydraulic—each providing a unique approach to unloading.

How to Operate the Barn Door on MTM Scrap Trailers

Our aluminum barn door is a user-friendly, secure option, especially for our 40-ft scrap trailers.

Here’s how to operate it:

  1. Switch to ‘Bag Down’ Position
Start by flipping the switch to the “bag down” position. This will drop the bags and unlock the tailgate, initiating the tailgate latch opening.
  2. Open and Secure the Tailgate
Once unlocked, swing the tailgate fully to the passenger side of the trailer. Secure it by hanging the chain in the chain lock—your trailer is now ready for unloading.

Air High-Lift vs. Hydraulic High-Lift Tailgates

For a high-lift tailgate option, MTM offers both air and hydraulic systems, each with a unique approach to unloading.

Here’s a closer look at both:

  • Air High-Lift Gate Operation
    • To open, switch the gate to the “open” position.
    • Go to the front of the truck and use the gate latch system. Once you pull the release, the latches will open, and the tailgate will start lifting.
  • Hydraulic High-Lift Gate Operation
    • Operates similarly to the air system, but with hydraulic controls for the lift.

Key Steps for Both Systems

  1. Ensure your tailgate latches are released before you start to dump.
  2. Make sure your bags are in the down position to avoid any issues during unloading.

Safety First

Always double-check that all components are securely latched or released according to your tailgate type. Whether you’re using the barn door or high-lift option, a quick review of these settings will keep your equipment—and yourself—safe.

At MTM, we’re here to ensure your trailer works as hard as you do. Our tailgates, designed for durability and ease of use, help make every load safer and every job easier.
